Coach Q+A Series: Rob Hewitt

In this Q+A series, we’ve asked our Coaches to share their insights into the work they do and how our services can support you. Whether you’re looking for guidance on Leadership, Succession Planning, or Business & Strategy, this series will give you a deeper understanding of how we help Rural New Zealanders navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Our goal? To provide the knowledge, tools, and support you need to move forward with clarity, confidence, and a strong network behind you.

First up is Rob Hewitt, our Partner in Central & South Otago / Southland.

Who are your typical clients?
Anyone. Younger farmers learning how to manage teams (get engagement, build enthusiasm, find/keep good staff), gain clarity on their own direction, through to more senior farmers wondering how start the succession process.

Which Rural Coach services are most popular with your clients?
Succession Planning is always a big one. The younger generation are often wanting clarity regarding their future in the business (often they start the conversations), whilst the senior generation are trying to work out how succession can be done without risking the break down in family relationships.

What are the most common challenges you see your clients facing?
Many are so busy in their businesses, they struggle to get time to stand back and work 'on their business'. More time for planning, thinking 'big picture', what is our real purpose, where are we heading? Sometimes setting a big goal is too scary as it looks impossible— breaking it down into small steps, with a good plan, may make it achievable.

How do you get the clients’ good ideas out of their heads?
By gaining their trust, asking lots of questions, and listening. Give them time. Often they have never shared their ideas, even with their partners, so getting them out is a major step in understanding where they want to go, and how they want to get there.

What factors do you see commonly preventing clients from achieving their dreams/objectives?
Often they have never challenged themselves to set a long-term vision/dream in writing, let alone sharing it. Once it is written down and shared, it becomes a commitment, and the whole team can understand how they can help achieve that goal.

What gives you the most joy when working with your clients?
Seeing the unity develop by sharing values, purpose, vision, goals, etc, with partners, staff, and professional team. This can help relieve some pressure, and all of a sudden it's not 'all on me to make it happen'. Also, seeing the 'lightbulb go off' when somebody understands 'the why' for the first time.
